2025 Elevating Credit Union Leaders: Transforming Managers Into Visionary Leaders - Conference Series

Expand Your Impact: The Elevating Credit Union Leaders Series is your opportunity to grow into an influential leader, with a focus on the unique challenges and opportunities within credit unions.

 

Participants in this four-part conference series will engage in a variety of leadership development discussions, including evolving from managers to mentors, identifying and overcoming leadership challenges, and strategic communication techniques. This series will explore the mindset required for effective leadership and the crucial qualities that define successful leaders, all designed to empower attendees to achieve their full potential in leadership roles.

Speakers include Mark Arnold, Founder & CEO of On the Mark Strategies, and Shawn M. Temple, Strategy Director for On the Mark Strategies. Both experts bring extensive experience in branding, strategy, and leadership development.

 

Session Descriptions:

 

Session One:

  • Transformational Leadership
    • Teaches how a manager and mentor are different. Discuss practical tips for developing other leaders and building a real bench.
  •  A Mind for Leadership
    • Having a mind focused on leadership. Your thoughts determine your actions and results.
  • Mindset Views
    • Removing the need to be in control; transitioning from hero to guide.
  • Levels of Leadership
    • From John Maxwell’s “Developing the Leader Within You.” The journey about why people follow you: position to personhood.
 

Session Two:

  • Cohesive Teams
    • From Patrick Lencioni's "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team." Defining and discussing trust, conflict, commitment, accountability and results.
  • 3x30
    • A short exercise asking participants what three action steps they will take in the next 30 days to improve strategic skills.

Session Three:

 

  • Seven Habits of Highly Ineffective Leaders
    • Avoid these seven items that make your leadership toxic or ineffective.
  • How to Lead in the Grey
    • Navigating ambiguous situations as a leader. Leadership is hardly ever black-and-white; you must learn to lead in the grey. For example, the "right" policy may not always be right for a member in need.
  • Working Across Generations
    • Each generation is formed by its unique experiences...and they can't all be led the same way. Matures, Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z all have different perceptions of the workplace. Learn how to connect with each generation and lead a diverse workplace.
  • Productive Meetings
    • Best practices for running effective meetings. Turn a dreaded part of the workday into productive times where stuff gets done.
  • Patrick Adams on Leadership
    • Insights on leadership from Patrick Adams, an internationally renowned leadership consultant. A list of things leaders should know and obsess over. For example, leaders must obsess over differentiation.
  • Leadership Lessons Learned the Hard Way
    • The speakers share what lessons they've learned along the way.
  • Power Hour + MasterMind
    • Focus on what you do that brings the most impact and value to the credit union.
    • Workshop leadership challenges in a "MasterMind" group of your leaders. Each person in the group supplies a challenge and all others in the group offer solutions.
  • The Let Them Theory
    • Based on the best-selling book by Mel Robbins, leaders learn how to embrace "The Let Them Theory" to foster stronger teams, reduce stress, and lead with confidence by focusing on what they can control and letting go of unnecessary resistance.
  • Bad Work, Good Work, Great Work
    • Focus on work that is truly great; reduce or eliminate other types of work.
  • Leadership Interview
    • It's time for the interview! You get to ask the speakers whatever you like! What are the three keys to leadership? What is your greatest failure?
 

Session Four:

 

  • Green Flags
    • You've heard of red flags. Well, these are green flags for leaders. An excellent leader will make time for others, never bad mouth others and so much more.
  • Leadership Landmines
    • There are three behaviors that undermine your team's trust in you. Be self-aware and cognizant of your facial expressions, your speech and people trying to interpret your actions.
  • WOMBAT
    • A short exercise designed to uncover every leader's WOMBATs (Wastes of Money, Bandwidth and Time).
  • Increase Team Engagement
    • Five ways to empower your employees to win. Many people are only doing what's required; push them to go beyond. Make work meaningful, clarify expectations and more to reach your team.
  • Leadership Blind Spots
    • Top ten leadership blind spots and remedies.
  • Expanding the Vision
    • A mental exercise designed to train leaders on thinking far ahead. The exercise asks leaders to expand the institution's current vision and have an eternal mindset so they can reverse engineer the future.
  • Finishing Strong
    • A brief exercise cultivating resilience and strong finish in projects as a leader.

Mark Arnold is an acclaimed speaker and expert in branding, training and strategic marketing for credit unions. Mark helps credit unions and banks achieve their goals with insight and energized training. Speaking regularly to audiences around the country, his many topics including branding, marketing, strategy, leadership, personal growth and generational issues. His breadth of knowledge connects with audiences for keynotes, breakouts and training events. Mark is the author of “Marked for Success: Daily Ideas to Help Your Financial Institution Succeed,” “Think Huge: How To Elevate Your Life and Your Business”,“My Best Service Ever” and “Marketing Across the Generations: Gen. X”. He serves as founder/president of On the Mark Strategies, a consulting firm specializing in branding and strategic planning.

 

Loy.jpgLaura Loy, Chief Experience Officer, On the Mark Strategies
Laura Loy is a skilled leader, with experience managing complex projects and delivering much needed advice at the right time.
 

Since joining On The Mark Strategies, Laura has facilitated journey mapping sessions and member experience training sessions. She also loves facilitating strategic planning sessions, as it allows her to revisit the strategic level she worked at as a credit union executive.
 

Prior to joining On The Mark Strategies, Laura served as Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Zia Credit Union, a $205M credit union in New Mexico. During her tenure at Zia, Laura led the communications initiative for members and staff during a core conversion. She was also responsible for a new website redesign and development, and she led Zia in a comprehensive rebrand project in partnership with On The Mark Strategies.
 

Laura is a CUNA Credit Union Certiļ¬ed Marketing Executive (CUCME). She has a M.A. in International Business from UC San Diego and a B.A. in Business Economics from UC Santa Barbara. She brings to the table nearly 25 years of experience in marketing, communications, training and management, including 10 years abroad in Japan and Latin America. 

 

Temple-Square.jpgShawn M. Temple, Strategy Director, On the Mark Strategies
Shawn Temple has served the credit union industry since 1996, holding positions in both upper and middle management across lending, operations, compliance, marketing, training, and project management.
 

Since joining On The Mark Strategies in 2021, Shawn has facilitated many strategic planning sessions for credit unions of all sizes, working with their management staff and boards of directors to create actionable strategic plans. He is also a certified Working Genius facilitator and has led teams of all experience levels through leadership training and organizational alignment programs. 
 

Shawn’s background includes serving as a credit union Chief Operating Officer, where he directed multiple divisions as well as planned, implemented, and managed strategic objectives for the credit union. He has facilitated four mergers and led two core conversions, the construction and opening of two branches, multiple debit and credit card conversions, as well as several online and mobile banking platform conversions.
 

Shawn has served as a faculty member for Southwest CUNA Management School after graduating from the school in 2009. He has been certified by CUNA as a Credit Union Compliance Expert (CUCE). Shawn holds a B.S. in Accounting and a Master of Business Administration from Louisiana State University Shreveport.

Cancellation Policy:

A refund of the amount paid, less an $230 administrative fee per registrant, will be given for all cancellations submitted via email to events.training@nycua.org ten or more business days prior to the start of the session. No refunds will be granted if the cancellation is received after that time frame. Substitutes will be accepted any time prior to the start of the program at no additional cost. Simply email events.training@nycua.org, listing the new participant and who they will be replacing.
