Understanding Cognitive Bias & the Implications for Credit Unions

Kevin Smith, Consultant, TEAM Resources
There’s no getting around it – Cognitive Bias affects us all. Long ago our brains developed short-cuts to help us survive and make decision making easier. The problem is those short cuts haven’t kept up with the world around us. But understanding how cognitive bias works helps us to deal with it. In this session, you will learn about some of the many biases, how to spot them and then deal with them. Better yet you can learn to harness their power for good and for the benefit of your teams, your members and your community. This program promotes understanding and how the credit union, from the board to the front line, can create a better environment.

In this session, attendees will:
•    Use show versus tell activities for “a-ha” moments
•    Explore how recognition of bias can bring teams closer together to rely on each other
•    Learn to understand how to relate and engage with peers to improve communication
•    Create systems to reduce bias and benefit the staff and the membership

2:00pm - 3:00pm

Members' Expectations Are Evolving, Are We?
Jeffry Schmitt, Partner Solutions Consultant, TruStage
Based on a survey of over 1200 US consumers conducted in Q1 of 2023 (repeated from a 2019 study) Attendees will learn:

•    Top member worries
•    How they view the difference between branch and on-line experience
•    How we can leverage these insights to create actionable tactics
•    How to think holistically about a multi-channel member experience

Key Takeaway: Understanding and adapting to changing member expectations, especially in terms of digital and branch experiences, is crucial for credit unions to remain relevant and responsive.

The Relationship Web: Board, Supervisory Committee and Management
Susan M. Landauer, CPA, Forensic Accounting Services Group, LLC
Who does what? I don’t know. Third base! (From an old Abbott and Costello bit!) In the credit union, the board is elected by the membership, they appoint the Supervisory Committee, who then makes sure the Board is doing their job! And who and how are we all communicating with the staff at the credit union? Let’s discuss the who, what and where’s of the relationships we find in credit union land!

Boards Behaving Badly: The Guide to Handling Unruly Directors
Kevin Smith, Consultant, TEAM Resources
We’ve heard the stories, or experienced firsthand ourselves – yes – distracting or unruly directors. They come in many forms and in some familiar stereotypes. Find out how you can manage unruly director behavior and keep your board on track to provide peak strategic value. This task belongs to every member of the board, not just to the board chair. Starting with good governance practices you can arm yourself with tools for:

•    Having difficult conversations;
•    Holding directors accountable;
•    Creating an innovative and dynamic board culture;
•    Maximizing teamwork and rapport;
•    Preventing distractions and rambling board meetings;
•    And much more…

A Comprehensive Board Orientation Process
Kevin Smith, Consultant, TEAM Resources
It’s become cliché to mention how much more complex credit unions are and by default credit union board work. But even as we take that fact for granted board orientation programs have often not kept up that pace and are lacking. It’s imperative that new board members get up to speed as quickly as possible and have a full understanding of the work. In this session, Kevin Smith will provide an overview of a comprehensive orientation program and provide an approach to customizing your program.

This session will cover:
•    Training topics: Requirements & beyond
•    Timeline for onboarding and a calendar
•    An Onboarding Checklist
•    An Approach to Mentoring
•    The Value of Associate Director Programs
•    Staff Involvement and Limitations
•    And more.

Building the Supervisory Committee Charter

Susan M. Landauer, CPA, Forensic Accounting Services Group, LLC

Your internal audit department should have a charter. But what about the Supervisory Committee? While not required by regulation, it is a best practice to help define your role in the credit union. It is also a great aid for your committee to ensure that you have fulfilled all of your obligations.
